Mahayoi Vemana, popularly known as YOGI VEMANA, was an Indian philosopher and poet in the Telugu language. His poems are known for their use of simple language and native idioms. They discuss the subjects of yoga, wisdom and morality.

Mahayogi Vemana Peetha has been instituted at the Karnatak Univesity, Dharwad to honour Mahayogi Vemana, a saint, mystic popular poet and social reformer of Andhra Pradesh.
The process started with the donation of Rs. 1,00,000/- by Shri H. K. Patil, Treasurer, Vemana Vidyavardhaka Sangha, Hubli-Dharwad on 19.01.1983. The Sangha once again donated Rs. 1,00,000/- ON 19.01.1984. The Government of Andhra Pradesh donated Rs. 1,97,000/- through the International Telugu Institute on 10.10.1984. As the total corpus fund required at that time was only Rs. 3,00,000/-. Finally the proposal of instituting the Vemana Chair (Mahayogi Vemana Peetha) was accepted by the Syndicate of K.U.Dharwad under Resolution No. 32 dated 19.10.1985.
Late Shri S.R.Patil, Retired Engineer and a Vemana Scholar functioned as Chief Coordinator of Vemana Chair for some years. For the last twenty years seven scholars have been looking after the activities of Mahayogi Vemana Peetha as Coordinator.
Spreading awareness among the students about the spiritual vision, equality of mankind, universal brotherhood and the great life values advocated by Mahayogi Veman, leading them to develop their personal life through this and to participate in social life with a positive mind.

Helping the students in the development of their physical, mental, moral and professional aspects by comparing the ideals of Mahayogi Vemana and other visionaries.
Spreading awareness about the thoughts of Mahayogi Vemana in different regions through Special Lectures, workshops and Seminars.
Conducting comparative study of Mahayogi Vemana and other visionaries & publishing the results
During the year 2018-19 OEC subject (Life & Philosophy of Mahayogi Vemana) for the P.G. Students has been started. In the Academic year 2019-20, total 129 students have taken admission.
During the year 2018-19, Mahayogi Vemana Building construction work started & it is completed in the year 2020. Interior work of the building is in process.
Celebration of Vemana Jayanti & Tatva Chintana Day : Since its inception the Peetha has been celebrating Vemana Jayanti (19th January) every year either independently or in collaboration with other like minded organization. From 2018 Tatva Chintana Day (2nd January) has been started in the name Shri S. R. Patil, Founder of Mahayogi Vemana Chair on his Birth day.
Special Lectures : Special lectures by eminent personalities on the life and contribution of Mahayogi Veman have been arranged not only at the University campus but also at interior places.
Publications: Mahayogi Vemana Peetha has published Ten books.
